What Are the Interview with the Vampire review & Recap
I had early misgivings about this series. Even if the plot incorporates fantastical creatures or superheroes, I desire my fiction to be as realistic as possible. The first film was a “realistic” and mature vampire film that could be taken seriously. When the trailer for this was published, and I saw a black Louis, I was a little concerned about how seriously this show would regard itself. I’m all for diversity, but I wouldn’t say I like it when a film or television show arbitrarily and illogically casts a person of color or switches the gender of a character for political reasons when it doesn’t make sense within the context of the tale. A wealthy black plantation owner would not have been plausible for the time period if this series had followed the film’s plot. The accent of Louis in the trailer was already incorrect and not sufficiently “Victorian” for the era. Even though I was already dissatisfied before viewing it, I decided to give it a go because I was such a fan of the film and the book. Well, it turns out that this story had a very plausible justification for their casting decision and had their own vision for Louis. My initial skepticism regarding the casting choice for Louis turned out to be a factor that makes this series intriguing and new while retaining the original’s tone of lyrical horror. Louis and the reporter have been perfectly cast for this edition of IWTV thus far. Sam Reid’s portrayal of Lestat is the one I’m not totally sold on just yet. He is not horrible, just a tad over the top and campy. Hopefully, his character will develop as the story develops. Consider this series. So far, it has been quite good.
